It's our turn now...

I’m watching the tracker on your flight make its way back across the miles, and missing you fiercely. We spent the morning cuddling, dreaming, planning, and making love. We kissed countless times, and watching you walk out the door was agony, even though we were immediately texting, then talking again within the hour. It feels, at times, as though we’re young again, just starting our lives, and working them into a shared life together. It’s pretty wonderful.

The other night, as we were talking about some recent difficult developments in the road ahead, you held my hand and said to me, “It’s our turn now.” Since then, it’s become a sort of mantra for us. We have both spent so much of our adult lives sacrificing for the comfort of others. Now, when the life for which we’ve yearned for so long is within our reach, we are making a conscious choice to choose ourselves and one another, mindful, always, of the impact it has, and doing as little harm as possible, because we are still who we are, but also not taking responsibility for those who refuse to consider us, or choose not to offer the same. We will never be the sorts to cause needless suffering, but we’re now going to include ourselves in those we protect from it. It’s liberating.

In that spirit, we began to talk about the future, one, three, five years down the line. I can’t wait to build this amazing life with you, my sweet girl. I love you, very, very much.
