Sharing the load...

One afternoon, when I was walking with you to work, you were a bit distant. I noticed, but didn’t say much until, near the end, I asked if you were alright. We sat down and you leaned against my shoulder and told that, sometimes you get a bit lost in your thoughts when you’re feeling nervous about something or other, and you worried, in that moment, that I would feel somehow unloved or neglected in some way. I held your hand and told you that you have always, as long as I’ve known you, been gentle with my heart and free with your attention and affection towards me, and I had never, even on that walk, felt anything other than completely loved.

I wanted to reiterate that here, as well, my heart. I know that there have been times in your past when others may have felt differently, but, to me, learning this about you meant that I was better able to care for you, as you care for me. I believe that in a relationship, we should take turns looking after one another, because life is often difficult, and there is a deep solace in knowing that, when things are a little too heavy, there’s someone else who can shoulder some of the load. Our love isn’t fragile. It’s strong and flexible and true. No matter what life throws at us, I know we can survive it. Look at all we’ve already overcome, after all. And, after every difficulty, we seem to come through it more in love, more connected, and with a deeper understanding of how we fit. It’s one of the things that makes me most sure of our future. I love you, my sweet girl, and I’ve got you, and trust that you’ve got me. I’ll be right here, now and always.
